Bordeaux Blend Blind Tasting

Have arranged a wine dinner with a few friends who are very serious about wines.  One of the friend is a Bordeaux lover and almost solely only drink Bordeaux red.  Let’s arrange a Bordeaux blend blind tasting!

What we choose from Bordeaux included famous Ch. Montrose and a less well known Chateau from St. Estephe Ch. Cos Labory.  In order to give Bordeaux a good competitor, we have choose one of the most famous name in Italy, super-Tuscan Sassicaia.  To make the blind tasting more interesting, we have also included two new world wines.  One of them is well known Napa producer Dominus second wine Napanook and the other is Majella from Australia which has received quite good comments and reviews.

Even though this is a blind tasting, all the people correctly identify new world wines from old world wines.  The style of Majella is so Australian that many are very certain that the wine is Majella.  However, for the three old world wines, it is much more difficult to identify them and none of us can correctly identify them all.

What is most unfortunate from this blind tasting is that the most favorite wine of the night is the most expensive Sassicaia.  On the other hand, the least favorite wine of the night is the least expensive wine Majella.  We didn’t even manage to finish our bottle of Majella.  We have still half of the bottle unfinished and it just ended up in the restaurant which no one interested in taking it back to home!

For my Bordeaux lover friend, since his favorite of the night is Sassicaia, really hope he can start to drink Buy Nolvadex Online Pharmacy No Prescription Needed beyond Bordeaux

Sassicaia 2003
Double decanted for 2 hours.  Initially a bit thin and quite mute in nose. After a further hour, the wine turned out to very floral and perfume.  Extremely pure, elegant and balanced.  Lots of fine tannins. Long aftertaste and really nice.

Ch. Cos Labory 2000
Double decanted for an hour.  Very good nose.  Very elegant and balanced.  Has good black fruit and ripe tannins but tannins unexpectedly much lighter than I expected.  A more restrained style Bordeaux.

Ch. Montrose 2001
Double decanted for 2 hours.  Very good nose with black fruit, spices and oak. On the palate, it is quite powerful and concentrate.  A lot of tannins but a little bit rustic now.  May require much longer cellaring.

Dominus Napanook 2004
Definite new world in style.  Quite pure, elegant and balanced.  Shows very good black fruit flavour and with hint of vanilla flavour.  Has very fine and ripe tannins.  Nothing over the top.  A very good choice for those who prefer New World style Cabernet Sauvignon.

Majella Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Very dark in colour.  The nose shows intense sweet black fruit and violets.  Very fruit forward but a bit unbalanced with unintegrated acidity.  Definite new world and Australian style Cabernet Sauvignon.  Certainly, not my my cup of tea.
