Krug Champagne Dinner

Once I know there is Krug dinner organized by Watson’s Wine Cellar, I immediately booked for it.  Krug is my favorite Champagne house.  Having a chance to try different Krug really excited me, not to mention a few are really too expensive for me to buy!

Krug Grande Cuvee
Always considered this is the best non vintage Champagne in the market.  This time Krug Grande Cuvee really disappointed me.  I found it too acidic and not balanced.  It is also not complex enough and enough have an unpleasant bitterness aftertaste.  What’s happened?  Does this Champagne requires more cellaring time or the quality of Krug Grande Cuvee has declined in recent years?

Krug Clos du Mesnil 1998
Even though this is a rare and expensive Champagne, producer Olivier Krug joked that this Champagne is actually very easy to make since it is a single vineyard and 100% Chardonnay Champagne.  The only major decision to make is only to make a vintage Clos du Mesnil or not.  Comparing to Grande Cuvee, the nose Buy prozac online of this Champagne is less pronounced.  However, it is much more balanced and has very good acidity.  It is also more complex comparing to Grande Cuvee.  However, with a retail price of over HK$6,000, I think it is too expensive.

Krug Vintage 1998
Same 1998 vintage but this Champagne has very different style from Clos du Mesnil.  I found the style very close of Krug house style of very strong intensity.  Its nose is very pronounced and has flavours of bread, apple, mushroom, honey and mineral.  Got very good acidity and very complex.  Aftertaste is long and pleasant.  I think it will benefit a lot from longer cellaring.  At a third to a fourth of the price of Clos du Mesnil, I think this one is definitely a better buy.

Krug Rose
Rose Champagne is not something I like.  Not only it is more expensive, I also don’t like having the taste of tannins and bitterness of red wine in Champagne.  Have drank Billecart-Salmon and Ruinart before and I don’t really like them.  Comparatively speaking, I think Krug Rose is much better since it didn’t have those flavours which I found quite unpleasant.  This rose got red fruit flavour as well as spice and I found it quite balanced.

Krug Collection 1985
My most awaited Champagne of the whole night.  Olivier Krug said this Champagne can tell everyone in the room the ageing potential of Krug Vintage Champagne.  Comparing to Champagne that didn’t age that long, I found this one has very different flavours.  The most obvious flavours are honey and dried fruit.  The nose actually quite like Tokaji Aszu and also has some similarity with Sherry.  The bubble is very fine.  I really like it a lot even though it is quite expensive.  I think I have to cellar more cases of fine Champagne for my future consumption!

My perference in descending order:

Krug Collection 1985
Krug Vintage 1998
Krug Clos du Mesnil 1998
Krug Rose
Krug Grande Cuvee
