On Chinese New Year Eve, I originally would like to open an expensive wine to celebrate.  Unfortunately, according to biodynamic calendar, that day was a root day.  To avoid serious disappointment, I decided just to open a medium priced Burgundy to celebrate.  My choice of that day is 2002 Nicolas Potel Volnay 1er Santenots.

2002 is a very good vintage in Burgundy with wines of ripe and fine tannins, ripe fruit and very good acidity.  With almost 10 years of ageing, I hope this premier cru is at peak now.  In addition, Volnay is one of my favorite village in Burgundy.  I especially like it superb elegant style.  A good year together with a reputable producer, I have quite high expectation on this wine.  For more information about Nicolas Potel please refer to this link (http://www.vinzealot.com/en/a-red-burgundy-for-non-burgundy-drinker-2003-nicolas-potel-vosne-romanee-1er-aux-malconsorts).

The wine has a much heavier and riper nose than I expected.  It is also showing slight hint of new world Pinot Noir character, a style in line with my previous experience with wines from Nicolas Potel.  It has dominated floral flavour with red berry, redcurrant, dried herb and plum flavours.  However, the floral flavour is more incense like than from fresh flower.  It also taste heavier in palate than I would normally expect from a Volnay.  Even though it is a 2002 and aged for a long period, it surprising still carries a lot of tannins.  Luckily, the tannins are very fine and ripe and integrated.

In summary, while I think this is a good wine, it is not a typical Volnay that I would expect.  If you prefer riper and heavier style Pinot Noir, you may like this one.
