Invited to join a couple of events for the Vinexpo held in Hong Kong, I received a few bottles of wine as gift.  These gift wines usually are inexpensive wines and I would not have any expectation on them.  One of these bottles is 2008 Clos Rene Pomerol.

When one mentioned about Pomerol, one of the things immediately come up to my mind is that they are expensive.  This bottle of 2008 Clos Rene sells about HK$200 retail.  For this price, I really cannot have any expectation on it.  What’s more, I even have slight worry as I never tried any Pomerol at this price range.  However, I’m already very surprised with my first smell on the wine.  Quite intense aromas of red fruits, black fruits, spices, pepper, mint and floral, really quite good in complexity.  In palate, although level of tannins is not high but the wine has good structure.  Quite elegant and long in length.  Although it didn’t give me any noble or aristocratic feeling that I often found in very good Bordeaux, how can I ask for more for a Pomerol at this price range?  Frankly, I think it is much better than most New World Merlot at similar price.  People always said a good French wine is expensive.  In a region as expensive as Pomerol, there are still a lot of hidden gems waiting for us to uncover.
